Burgruine Merkenstein

Description

Presumably built in the 11th century - first documented mention in 1141 (Ortwin von Merkenstein). Destroyed in an unknown manner between 1317 and 1324 (fire?), rebuilt in 1324. Various caretakers administered the castle until it was destroyed by the Turks in 1683. From this time onwards, the official seat of the Merkenstein lordship was moved to Gainfarn.
Today, the Türkenbrunnen fountain can be found next to the ruins on the site of the former Merkenstein zoo, as well as a cave to the east at the foot of the castle rock.
