Castle ruin of Rauheneck

Description

The castle was originally built in the 12th century on the rocky cliffs of a foothill of the Lindkogel on the banks of the Schwechat. During its eventful history, Rauheneck Castle was destroyed several times. In 1961, the town of Baden bought the castle hill and the ruins, which are now one of the largest castle complexes around Vienna.

The castle ruins are easy to walk around and can be visited at your leisure: from its weathered rooms to the chapel. PS for spooky fans: according to legend, the builder of the tower still haunts Rauheneck today - as a ghost who has not been released for all eternity.

The Rauheneck castle ruins are one of the 8 towers on the themed hike "The towers of the Vienna Woods".
