Museum Franzensburg

Description

Franzensburg Castle, one of the most striking buildings in the park, is located on an artificial island in the middle of the castle pond in Laxenburg Castle Park. The romantic moated castle was commissioned by Emperor Franz II/I in 1798 and is considered an important example of romantic historicism in Austria.

Even at the time of its construction, the castle was not intended as a residence, but as a museum and monument to the Habsburg dynasty. Medieval components, works of art and furnishings from various centuries were brought together here to create a neo-Gothic work of art. To this day, the castle houses numerous magnificent rooms with ornate coffered ceilings, leather wallpaper, furniture and works of art from different eras.

Franzensburg Castle can be visited as part of a guided tour, during which visitors can discover the state rooms, halls and historical collections. During special tower and roof tours, the path leads up to the High Tower via battlements and stairs, from where a wide view opens up over the castle park and the surrounding landscape.

In the summer months, the moonlight tours offer a special perspective of the castle. Visitors experience Franzensburg Castle in the light of the moon and learn more about the romantic enthusiasm for the moon, which influenced park design as early as 1800.

At the end of October, things get even more mysterious: the guided tour "Ghost Hour in Laxenburg Palace Park" takes you through the park and to Franzensburg Castle, where dark stories from the Habsburg era are told.

As the centerpiece of the palace park, Franzensburg Castle combines architecture, history and landscape and offers an impressive insight into the romantic imagination of the Habsburg era.
