Museum Franzensburg
Description
The Franzensburg is considered the crowning glory of the garden design of the so-called "Rittergau" in Laxenburg Palace Park. It bears witness to the idea of romantic historicism and is not without good reason considered to be "Austria's little treasure house".
Emperor Franz had this "Austrian Treasure House" built between 1798 and 1801 in accordance with the ideas of Romantic Classicism and gave it its name. Extensions in the form of the miners' courtyard (Café Meierei) and the new bailiwick (museum store) were completed by 1835 under the direction of castle governor Michael Riedl. Designed from the outset as a museum and representation area, the interior is richly furnished with wooden coffered ceilings, leather wallpaper, marble floors and numerous pieces of furniture.
