Osmanenmuseum
Description
The Ottoman Museum, which opened in 1973, is located in the courtyard wing of the historic town hall (Marktplatz 10) on the second floor and extends over three rooms. It offers an overview of the Turkish invasions of 1529 and 1683 and documents the cultural relations between Austria and the Ottoman Empire in the 16th and 17th centuries. Among other things, visitors learn that the Turkish sieges by no means only shaped the fate of the capital Vienna, but that they also - and above all - threatened the existence of the area surrounding the capital and the open country to the east.
Numerous groups of originals are included in the exhibition. In addition to a wall painting from 1700, for example, a large number of medals minted on the occasion of the sieges of Vienna in 1529 and 1683. There is also a collection of gouaches made in 1628/29 in connection with the Grand Embassy of Baron Hans Ludwig von Kuefstein. The special features of this exhibition also include models, Turkish weapons and detailed figurines of Austrian and Ottoman troops.
