Wallfahrtskirche Maria Lanzendorf
Description
In Maria Lanzendorf in Lower Austria, one of the oldest places of pilgrimage in Austria invites you to pay a spiritual visit - with a parish church, monastery, chapel of mercy and Calvary.
Numerous legends surround the origins and history of the Maria Lanzendorf pilgrimage church. One of these founding legends states that the apostle Luke is said to have preached the story of salvation as early as 70 AD. Historically, however, the first documented mention of the place of grace Maria auf der Heyd dates back to 1145. In 1418, Maria Lanzendorf is mentioned for the first time as a place of pilgrimage.
However, the influx of pilgrims really began in the late 17th century, when people in and around Vienna were struggling with the plague epidemic - and sought protection and healing in Maria Lanzendorf.
To this day, pilgrims from all over the world are welcomed in the pilgrimage church - and find a place of contemplation and consolation here. With a Gothic chapel and a new Baroque building, a free-standing chapel of grace and a Baroque vaulted fresco, there is also plenty to see - such as valuable historical altars and numerous votive images.
The Calvary from the late 17th and early 18th century with its war memorial and the adjoining monastery building with its old library and stone Pietà are also very noteworthy. In front of the church, several stone statues of saints from the early 18th century also catch the eye.
